Evelyn Shafer

Obituary of Evelyn M. Shafer

Evelyn Shafer was born Evelyn Pollack on February 15, 1925 to John and Ida Pollack in DuBois, Pa. There she spent her childhood and early adulthood. She graduated from DuBois High School in 1943. During the war years she worked as a nurse's aid and as a retoucher for photographer L.L. Steinberg. In 1947 she married her high school sweetheart, James Shafer. Jim attended college at the DuBois campus of Penn State University. Evelyn gave birth to daughter, Cynthia in 1948. In 1950 Jim transferred to the University Park campus. There he completed his education. Evelyn gave birth to a second daughter, Susan, in 1952. While raising their young family in State College, Evelyn worked as a retoucher for photographer Bill Coleman. When the girls were in their teens, Jim and Ev took up camping and sailing. Many enjoyable weekends were spent at Lake Glendale in Prince Gallitzin State Park. Penn State Football and tailgating were also favorite activities. In 1966 Ev began working for Commercial Printing, retiring in 1990. Jim died suddenly and unexpectedly in 1975. Ev carried on, supported by her many friends in the Lake Glendale Sailing Club. She continued camping, sailing and tailgating well into her nineties. She was also an active member of Trout Unlimited. She lived a good long life, had many friends, and enjoyed it all.

She is survived by her daughters Cindy Law (Gordon) and Susy Shafer. Her parents, husband Jim, and her brother Eddie predeceased her. She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church.

There will be no public funeral at this time but a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lake Glendale Sailing Club Youth Program or Trout Unlimited.
